How to choose or create a quality photo reference for a commissioned portrait
- The subject should be photographed with a high quality camera and lens, preferably in soft natural lighting such as a north light window or overcast outdoors.
- Avoid flash or high contrast sunlight/dark shadows.
- There should be minimal or no distortion
- Soft smiles or serene expression (big smiles are wonderful in photos, but look weird in paintings!)
- Multiple photo references are always encouraged,
the more images I have to choose from or work with, even if they are many photos of the same pose with tiny changes,  the better the results will be.  With children especially, I find that it takes them a long time to relax during photo shoots and so just taking a lot of photos will increase the odds of having good ones.
